This was a chat I had today with a friend, fellow Likemind attendee, student, and next-gen planner – Josh Hauberg. We talk about this month’s Likemind, continuing education when you’re trying to get a job as a planner, blogging, and putting together a resume/portfolio. Enjoy the window onto our conversation…
joshuahauberg: i wish i could have made it out to likemind but my internship inhibited me from going :’(
me: it was a good one. about 12 peeps. missed your presence and input. how’s the internship going?
joshuahauberg: i will def be going to the next one! It’s going really good, i wish it was B2C but its still a great experience
me: for sure. when does it end? are you getting credit or money?
joshuahauberg: FYI there is a
AMA presentation on customer insights/ branding (presented by Mitch McCasland, also a fellow Likemind attendee and overall smart guy) on march 2nd it should be really interesting. no credit or money lol its all for the love of marketing and experience
me: wow, you’re getting used man.

but your intentions are good. which counts
joshuahauberg: yea i know… i didnt want a sales internship so i took this…
me: nah, haven’t read much from him. he’s like SO IN that I don’t pay any attention to him. hahaa, if that makes sense. that’s the kind of consumer I am. but anyway, what nuggets are you getting from it?
joshuahauberg: yea i gotcha…. i like his stuff personally, i really didn’t even know how IN he was…
me: you should write a blog post about your thoughts. self-marketing tip #1: get a blog
joshuahauberg: its just talking about how the school system is made to turn the population into robots. yea i have a blog i was thinking about making a post about reaction marketing… like what facebook does… the other day i posted about sushi and they put up a sushi ad on my the side of my page today… pretty cool stuff
me: hahaha, funny about the ad. great idea for a post. there’s totally reactive and proactive marketing
joshuahauberg: i know and one day i think it will pretty much be The Standard everything will be tailored to you
me: proactive marketing will be customized, segmented, and niche.
joshuahauberg: hey i have a huge question that has been swirling in my head: do you think a masters in anthropology would give me a better position in getting a job in planning?
me: possibly. it adds diversity and focus to your skills at the same time, strengthens your portfolio. but you could get a job now.
joshuahauberg: really… i guess i am enjoying school/ scared about not getting a job i would enjoy… and have alot of thoughts on staying in school
me: or you could wait till Planning/Strategy/Insights figures itself out as a discpline and position yourself for the future. Or you can get into an agency and risk being frustrated with how it is now. your path into planning will be unique.
joshuahauberg: wow those are some great insights i wanted to talk to you about this at likemind but i couldnt make it… thanks i really appreciate your thoughts
me: no problem. explaining it to you helps me figure it all out for myself.

and it’s changing.
joshuahauberg: lol i want to make my own degree tailored for planning
me: exactly. that’s what your resume/portfolio will be: Your POV on the discipline.
joshuahauberg: thanks… well it was great talking to you like always… hope things are going well at i
nteger and i look forward to the blog post… cheers
me: good chatting with you too. laterz
